Anxiety at School: Why Resources Alone Are Not Enough

There is a quiet assumption in education that struggle is a resourcing problem. Give a child a good school, extra tutoring, a supportive home and every material advantage, and things should come right. Yet many families who have provided all of this find themselves watching a child who is anxious, avoidant, and slipping backwards anyway, and wondering what they possibly missed.

The honest answer is that anxiety does not check your postcode. It affects children in high-achieving households at least as often as anywhere else, and in some ways the pressure of high expectations, however lovingly meant, can sharpen it. What these children need is not more support, but the right support. The distinction matters enormously.

How anxiety actually shows up at school

Anxiety in children rarely announces itself as worry. It wears disguises, and the disguises are what schools and parents tend to respond to.

It looks like avoidance. Homework not started, tests missed through mysterious illness, a growing reluctance to attend school at all. From the outside this reads as laziness or defiance. From the inside, it is self-protection: the task has become associated with threat, and the nervous system is doing exactly what nervous systems do about threats.

It looks like perfectionism. Some anxious children do the opposite of avoiding. They work relentlessly, redo pages that were already correct, and dissolve over a single dropped mark. This child often flies under the radar entirely, because their results look fine. The cost is invisible until it isn't.

It looks like blankness. This one has a well-established scientific explanation. In a landmark series of experiments, Ashcraft and Kirk showed that maths anxiety consumes working memory: anxious individuals had measurably less mental capacity available for calculation, and their performance dropped sharply on exactly the multi-step problems that demand it (Ashcraft and Kirk, 2001). A child in a state of high alert genuinely has less cognitive capacity for the task in front of them. This is why an anxious student can know something cold at home and produce nothing in a test. Teachers see inconsistency; what is actually happening is that fear is taxing the very system the maths needs.

It looks like anger. Particularly in adolescence, anxiety often presents as irritability, rudeness, or explosive frustration. Schools respond with behaviour policies. The underlying fear goes unaddressed and, usually, deepens.

Why maths is so often the flashpoint

Mathematics has properties that make it a magnet for anxiety. Answers are visibly right or wrong, so there is nowhere to hide. It is cumulative, so a wobble becomes a gap and a gap becomes a wall. And it is done publicly: cold-calling, answers on the board, marks read aloud.

Maths anxiety is one of the most heavily researched phenomena in educational psychology. Ray Hembree's meta-analysis of 151 studies found that it is consistently linked to lower performance and to avoidance of the subject altogether, but also found something more hopeful: when the anxiety itself was treated, performance rose to the level of non-anxious peers (Hembree, 1990). In other words, the maths ability was there all along. The anxiety was sitting on top of it.

Why well-resourced support can still miss

This is the difficult part for many families. More tutoring, more revision guides, more structured hours can actually make an anxious child worse, because they increase the sense that the stakes are high and the child is a problem to be fixed. There is even evidence that anxiety around maths transmits between adults and children: Maloney and colleagues found that when maths-anxious parents helped frequently with homework, their children learned less maths over the school year and became more anxious themselves (Maloney et al., 2015). Support delivered with the wrong emotional loading does not just fail. It compounds the problem.

The right support looks different. It starts by lowering the threat level rather than raising the workload. In practice, for one-to-one work, that means a few concrete things: no surprises, so the student always knows what the session will hold; mistakes treated openly as useful information, and modelled as such by the tutor; genuine early wins, engineered deliberately, so the child's own experience begins to contradict their fear; and progress measured against the student's own last week, never against a cohort or a sibling.

It also means going back further than pride would like. Anxiety usually sits on top of real gaps, often from years earlier, and no amount of reassurance substitutes for quietly rebuilding the foundations so that confidence has something real to stand on. Competence is the most durable anxiety treatment there is, and Hembree's finding points the same way: reduce the fear, rebuild the skill, and the results follow.

What parents can do

Watch for the disguises rather than waiting for a child to say "I'm anxious", because most never will. Take avoidance seriously as a signal rather than a character flaw. Be careful that support does not arrive dressed as pressure. And when choosing help, ask not only about qualifications and results, but how the person works with fear, because for many able children, the fear is the entire problem.

Every child who is anxious about maths was once a child who was not. With the right conditions, that earlier child is recoverable. It simply takes someone who treats the anxiety and the algebra as one job, not two.
